I’m from Sudan and I’m the chairwoman of the Cultural Nubian Club in Latam. This association organizes information meetings for North Sudanese families. It’s very important for us to talk to the women about female genital mutilation (FGM). As a key person, I also make home visits.
I’m also a key liaison between our association, FSAN, and the Municipal Health Service (GGD)

in The Hague. Together with Eritrean, Somali, Ethiopian, and Sudanese people, we organized a joint meeting. Sometimes we invite doctors to explain the physical dangers. Sometimes we invite men to speak, so they can better convince other men. We also choose to let young people speak. The young people understand that it’s dangerous and that it must be stopped. Older people attach more importance to what their families think.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a dangerous practice with lifelong consequences for women. From the beginning, we have told our community that this practice is not part of Islam. We have also encouraged people to be able to say no to family members in Sudan who might want their daughters to be circumcised.
In the beginning, it was difficult for us to talk about this topic. No one really dared to bring it up. Now, women are more confident asking questions. So we listen extra carefully. We now offer more information about aftercare. We can actually answer more questions and refer more women to the Municipal Health Service (GGD).
People from our community are still struggling with their families in Sudan over the end of female genital mutilation (FGM). In May or June 2015, we will organize a large gathering where we will, as it were, administer a “vaccination.” We will instill empowerment and the right arguments: “Take care of your children while you’re there.” From the outset, you must communicate clearly and concisely with the family: “You can’t leave your girls alone. It’s no longer permitted in the Netherlands. If anything happens to your daughter, a prison sentence in the Netherlands is a logical consequence.”
